Via Ferratas in Málaga: Adventure and Thrills at Your Fingertips

Via ferratas, also known as equipped paths or iron routes, are hiking trails where steps, pegs, cables and steel suspension bridges have been installed to facilitate ascent and progression on steep and vertical terrain. Today we will discover the most important ones in the province of Malaga.

The 5 Via Ferratas of Málaga

Málaga can proudly boast one of the best and most complete networks of equipped via ferratas in Spain. Routes for all levels and fitness conditions allow adventurers to enjoy this exhilarating activity while surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that will leave you speechless.

El Chorro Via Ferrata

One of the most emblematic natural enclaves in the province is undoubtedly El Chorro, located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Park, between the municipalities of Álora, Antequera and Ardales.

The El Chorro Via Ferrata is considered one of the most vertical via ferratas in Spain.

With a length of 1,300 metres and a height difference of 350 metres, this route, which opened in 2017, offers two parallel trails that occasionally join together: one of medium difficulty and the other of high difficulty, making it suitable for both beginners and experts.

Both routes offer spectacular views of the Guadalhorce River, the Gaitanejo reservoir, the Caminito del Rey and the Sierra de Huma mountains from a privileged vantage point. An extreme experience that you can enjoy with the help of our professionals.

See El Chorro Via Ferrata

Cerro Virgen de Gracia Via Ferrata

The town of Archidona is home to this interesting circular route of low-medium difficulty, barely 300 metres long but offering many metres of excitement. Located on the Cerro de la Virgen de Gracia, it offers continuous views over the Chorro reservoir and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

It is ideal for beginners before moving on to more vertical routes. Suitable for children over 10 years of age accompanied by an adult.

El Techo Via Ferrata

A major highlight for hiking and climbing enthusiasts, this spectacular via ferrata stretches 840 meters along the Becerrero cliff, between the municipalities of Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella.

Classified as a medium to high-level route that requires good physical condition, it features two parallel routes and an impressive 160-meter-long Tibetan bridge suspended 120 meters above the ground. A true challenge suitable only for thrill-seekers without a fear of heights.

El Canal Via Ferrata

The mountain village of El Burgo hosts this fun, family-friendly route. Although it is only 300 meters long, it has a positive elevation gain of 200 meters, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

With horizontal sections alongside the canal, vertical wall climbs, and a final zip line for extra excitement, it’s a perfect option for families with children over 8 years old. All of this comes with stunning panoramic views of the Genal Valley. Adrenaline guaranteed!

Castillo del Águila Via Ferrata

This circular route, located in Sierra Bermeja, connects the village of Genalguacil with the Castle of the Eagle (Castillo del Águila) across striking reddish cliffs. The route is over 500 meters long with a positive elevation gain of 200 meters and is divided into two clearly distinct sections.

The first section is of low to medium difficulty and offers magnificent views of the Genal Valley. The second part is more vertical and suitable only for experienced users. A perfect adventure for an intense day out with spectacular views of the Andalusian countryside.

Via ferrata prices in Malaga

To undertake any of the via ferrata routes in the province of Málaga, it is recommended that you hire a specialised company that provides approved technical equipment and has qualified guides.

The prices for the activity, for example,vía ferrata de El Chorro costs around 50€ and includes a helmet, harness, double pulley for steel cables and gloves. This price also includes supervision by expert guides throughout the itinerary, making your visit unique.

In short, the possibilities offered by the via ferratas in Malaga are almost endless. Routes for all levels, ages and fitness levels. Spectacular equipped climbs that allow you to enjoy unique landscapes in a safe and exciting way. What are you waiting for to live this incredible experience?

History of Cuevas del Becerro

The history of Las Cuevas del Becerro is fascinating and dates back to ancient times. This place has witnessed numerous historical events over the centuries, from the first human settlements to Roman and Arab influence.

There are two possible explanations for the origin of its name. The first, and best known, is that a shepherd lost one of his calves in one of the caves, and it was found thanks to its cries for help. Another well-known legend is that the area is surrounded by caves and a golden figure of a calf was found in one of them.

The historical monuments of Cuevas del Becerro

Roman Bridge: An ancient stone bridge from Roman times, a living testimony to ancient engineering and a must-visit for history lovers.

The incredible cuisine of Cuevas del Becerro

After exploring every corner of Cuevas del Becerro, you must enjoy its cuisine, as this is an area where quality, traditional products form the basis of its delicious gastronomy.

One of the most famous dishes is the alpujarreño, a combination of meats such as black pudding, sausage, pork loin and ham, all served with potatoes. This dish will give you a real energy boost.

To accompany it, there is no better drink than a good Andalusian gazpacho, a cold soup made with cucumber, pepper, tomato and garlic.

Another very traditional dish is migas. This dish, which originated as a way of using up leftover bread, has become an icon of Andalusian cuisine.

And to round off your meal perfectly, don’t miss out on the incredible homemade sweets made in the village itself, such as pestiños, roscos de vino, borrachuelos and torrijas.

How to get to the Cuevas del Becerro

Cuevas del Becerro is easily accessible and well-connected to other towns in Málaga province:

Typical Things of Málaga

Malaga is a very rich and unique province with its own identity that revolves around many factors, including some of the things for which we are best known today, the typical things about Malaga that make it so special and unique. Here we bring you a small sample of these things that make up the province of Malaga, although if you really want to get to know it, you’ll have to come and see for yourself.

Typical Food of Málaga

When it comes to gastronomy, grilled sardine skewers (espetos) are the star. If you visit Málaga, it’s a must to enjoy an espeto at one of the many beachfront chiringuitos (beach bars), savoring freshly grilled sardines under the Andalusian sun.

Of course, fish is not limited to espetos. Fried fish platters, which combine various types of fried fish like anchovies, baby squid, and rosada, are another ideal way to enjoy Málaga’s seaside cuisine in one of the famous chiringuitos.

Enjoy typical Málaga cuisine along with a visit to the Caminito del Rey with our Basic Ticket Package for the Caminito del Rey.

Typical Dishes of Málaga

Although fish is a major highlight, Málaga has much more to offer. Some of the most typical dishes include porra antequerana, plato de los montes, and the famous camperos.

Porra Antequerana: Similar to Córdoba’s salmorejo, this dish is made from bread, tomato, garlic, and pepper, usually accompanied by boiled egg, tuna, and Serrano ham. Refreshing and delicious, it can be enjoyed any time of the year.

You can try this dish at our restaurant in El Chorro

Plato de los Montes is popular in the Málaga mountains, this hearty dish combines fried eggs, potatoes, and some type of meat, such as chorizo, blood sausage, or peppers. It’s generous in portion size, definitely not for the faint of appetite.

Los camperos de Málaga, one of Málaga’s most iconic sandwiches, camperos are made with round bread and filled with various ingredients. The most typical version includes chicken, cheese, ham, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise. There are countless places dedicated solely to serving camperos due to their immense popularity.

Typical Wine of Málaga

Everything tastes better with a good wine, and as true Malagueños, we know this well. Meals are often accompanied by sweet local wines such as Pedro Ximénez, Lágrima, or Pajarete. These are some of the most famous wines from the region, though Málaga boasts a wide variety worth exploring.

Typical Sweets of Málaga

After a great meal comes a delicious dessert typical of Malaga. There is nothing more typical than tortas locas. Tortas locas are discs of puff pastry, egg and icing, filled with custard. They are distinguished by their orange colour and incredible flavour.

They are the most famous sweets in Malaga and since the 1950s they have continued to delight all Malaga residents and tourists who visit the area.

Other Typical Things in Málaga

Although we are renowned for our spectacular cuisine, Malaga is much more than just our food and climate; we also have our traditions.

Among Malaga’s traditions, its dances stand out, such as La Malagueña, a type of dance typical of the area with traditional folk singing, similar to the fandango or the Verdiales.

Verdiales, older than flamenco itself, began as a peasant song that has survived to this day.

Now that you know a little more about the typical things that make Malaga a unique and special province, it’s time to discover it for yourself. Lose yourself in every corner of this beautiful land and let Malaga’s culture take hold of you.

Here we tell you all about the Christmas activities in Málaga so you can enjoy a dream holiday in our beautiful province.

Málaga’s Christmas Essentials

Málaga offers a great variety of Christmas activities, and here is a selection of our favourites.

Christmas Lights on Calle Larios in the Historic Centre

There is no Christmas in Málaga without wandering through the city centre and being amazed by the spectacular light show on Calle Larios. This year, there will be three daily shows featuring music, colour and, of course, thousands of photos and videos. It’s an unmissable plan for families, couples or friends, where more than one and a half million lights illuminate the streets of Málaga city.

The Christmas lighting is the star of the festive season in Málaga. The official switch-on takes place on November 28, and the traditional light-and-sound show on Calle Larios returns with three daily performances at 18:30, 20:30 and 22:00.

In addition to Larios, much of the historic centre will be decorated with more than two hundred light arches, Christmas motifs, illuminated streetlamps and special ornamentation on streets such as San Juan, Marqués de Larios, Plaza de la Constitución and Paseo del Parque. Strolling through the old town at dusk becomes an essential plan: festive atmosphere, music, open shops and a warm ambiance that attracts thousands of visitors.

Christmas Videomapping on Málaga Cathedral

This year, the Cathedral is introducing a new videomapping show titled The Dream Fisherman, inspired by a Christmas tale whose protagonist pays homage to the cenacheros, a traditional figure closely linked to Málaga’s identity. The projection will take place on the unfinished tower on the south side of the cathedral, visible from Molina Lario street.

The show, produced by Firefly Events, combines 2D and 3D infographics created specifically for the Cathedral and uses state-of-the-art laser technology. It features around 80,000 lumens of projection, 30,000 watts of sound and a technical setup including elevated structures, robotic lighting, smoke machines and special effects. The show lasts approximately 8 to 9 minutes.

Performances begin on November 29 and will take place daily at 19:00, 20:30 and 22:00, until January 4, 2026 (except on December 24 and 31).

Projections on the City Hall Façade

Málaga City Hall will once again display the decorative projections introduced in 2024. Its front wall will be continuously illuminated with Christmas designs such as stars, ornaments and traditional figures. The switch-on will also take place on November 29, following the same schedule as the main city lights.

Christmas Markets in Málaga

During the Christmas season, Málaga’s markets fill the city with festive charm: the Paseo del Parque market stands out for its handicrafts, traditional sweets, unique gifts and the unmistakable aroma of roasted chestnuts, while the Muelle Uno market offers seaside walks, shopping and lively terraces for dining. Many neighbourhoods also host their own markets or fairs, offering plans for every taste.

Our Christmas markets are among the most renowned in Spain and abroad. Don’t miss their fantastic stalls and fall in love with them.

Nativity Scenes in Málaga

One of the most cherished traditions. Don’t miss the Municipal Nativity Scene at City Hall or the live nativity scenes held in different towns around the province. Many museums also join in with special Christmas displays. You’ll find nativity scenes from brotherhoods, museums and even neighbourhood associations.

Christmas in Málaga is also known for its strong cultural tradition. Across the city, you can visit municipal nativity scenes, live displays, themed exhibitions and classical or choral music concerts.

On January 5, the Three Kings Parade will take place. This is one of the most eagerly awaited events for families. Floats, music, lights and thousands of people fill the streets to bid farewell to the Christmas season. Here you can check all updated information about the schedule and route of the Three Kings Parade 2025.

Botanical Garden Christmas Lights (Málaga)

The La Concepción Botanical Garden in Málaga opens its doors from the last week of November until after Epiphany to host one of the most spectacular and unique visits in the province. For Christmas, the garden is adorned with festive lights reminiscent of central European Christmas markets, creating magical illuminated scenes that play with light and the architecture of the beautiful estate.

This is the perfect activity to enjoy in the late afternoon or evening with family, friends or your partner. A plan that blends nature, art and Christmas spirit in a truly special way. Tickets range from €6 to €15.50 and can be purchased on the garden’s official website.

Outdoor Activities

Christmas in Málaga is full of plans designed for children: ice-skating rinks, Christmas tourist trains, craft workshops, storytelling sessions… The historic centre and neighbourhoods come alive with activities that allow kids to experience a magical Christmas.

One of the children’s favourite activities, though adults often enjoy it just as much, is the Three Kings Parade.

Christmas food in Andalusia

Andalusian cuisine is considered one of the richest in Spain, thanks to the wide variety of cultural influences that have shaped it throughout history. During a special time of year such as Christmas, families bring out their finest tableware and prepare their most traditional recipes. For this reason, today we explore the most typical Christmas food in Andalusia.

Traditional Christmas dishes in Andalusia

Below, we take a look at the most common products and recipes that can be found on Andalusian tables during the Christmas season.

Starters: opening the appetite

Below, we take a look at the most common products and recipes that can be found on Andalusian tables during the Christmas season.

Starters: opening the appetite: A traditional Christmas meal in Andalusia always begins with a generous selection of starters. One of the region’s greatest strengths is the exceptional quality of its ingredients, sourced from both land and sea.

Iberian cured meats and cheeses: A true classic that is easy to enjoy without even noticing how much you have eaten. In almost every Spanish household, a large platter of ham, chorizo, and cheese takes centre stage — and Andalusian homes are no exception.

Seafood: Thanks to its proximity to the coast, seafood plays an important role in Andalusian Christmas meals. Mussels and clams, simply seasoned with a squeeze of fresh lemon, are a popular and refreshing choice.

Prawns:Grilled prawns are a favourite for almost every palate. In Andalusia, they are often served with a traditional majaillo, a simple sauce made with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and parsley.

You may also be interested in discovering Christmas activities in Málaga that you shouldn’t miss.

First course: light but full of flavour

After enjoying a variety of starters, it is common to wonder how much room will be left for the main course. For this reason, Christmas meals in Andalusia often include a light soup as a first course. There are two especially popular options:

Sopa de picadillo: A traditional chicken broth served with ham, hard-boiled egg, and sometimes noodles or croutons.

Seafood soup: Ideal for those who enjoy flavours from the sea, this soup combines fish and shellfish and is usually served with croutons.

Main course: the star of the table

The time comes for the most substantial and flavourful dish of the entire meal. As with the rest of Andalusian Christmas cuisine, both meat and fish options are common.

Roast lamb shoulder: Typically oven-roasted and served with potatoes, this is considered one of the most special meats for Christmas celebrations.

Goat meat: A traditional choice, especially in the province of Málaga. This dish stands out for its distinctive preparation and deep flavour, making it a favourite during festive meals.

Cod: A fish that never fails at Christmas time. It is usually prepared with a green sauce and served with vegetables, offering a lighter yet elegant main course.

At this time of year, you may also want to explore the Christmas markets in Málaga.

Desserts: for the bravest guests

Only the most enthusiastic diners reach the end of a Christmas meal still eager for dessert, but sweets are always an essential part of the table.

Nougat Flan: By combining a traditional dessert with one of the most iconic Christmas products, this flan becomes a true delight for the palate.

Rosquillos: Fried dough rings coated in sugar. They can be stored for several weeks, making them ideal for the long festive season.

Mantecados: Andalusia is home to Estepa, one of the main producers of mantecados in Spain. These crumbly Christmas sweets are an essential part of any Andalusian Christmas meal.

The ultimate Christmas menu in Andalusia

From all of these, we bring you the best Christmas menu, at least what we Andalusians generally prefer.

As a starter, we recommend Iberian ham and cheese, as they are a delicacy that you cannot afford every day. Later, accompany it with a picadillo soup, a warm and very pleasant dinner while waiting for the main course.

For special days such as New Year’s Eve or Christmas Eve, fish and seafood are usually very appealing, so we recommend cod with green sauce. If prepared correctly, it becomes a delicious gourmet dish.

As they say, a good restaurant is defined by its dessert. Here, our recommendation will depend on how much of a sweet tooth you have, but a nougat flan can be the perfect choice for any diner.

Although it used to be known as one of the most dangerous paths in the world, after its restoration in 2015 it became a very safe attraction, one that’s worth visiting at least once in your life. Along the route, you can see geological formations, diverse wildlife and panoramic views over the Guadalhorce River. In addition to the Caminito del Rey, in El Chorro you can explore the Guadalhorce reservoir, the Conde del Guadalhorce dam and enjoy activities such as climbing and water sports.

It is easily accessible by car from Málaga via the A-357. There are also trains connecting Málaga with the stations of El Chorro or Ardales, from where shuttle buses take you to the start of the route.

The Caminito del Rey is a linear trail of about 7.7 km that can be completed in approximately 3 to 4 hours. The route includes hanged walkways, tunnels and cliffside paths, with a moderate difficulty level. It’s ideal for people with some hiking experience and good physical condition. The best time to visit it is spring or autumn, when temperatures are milder and there are fewer visitors.

As an exciting new development, the construction of a new 110-meter pedestrian suspension bridge has been announced. It will open at the end of 2025 and will be the longest of its kind in Spain. This structure will be part of an extension of the route, making it even more spectacular and accessible. Without a doubt, this addition will make the Caminito del Rey one of the best hiking routes in the country and a benchmark among hiking trails in Málaga.

2. Ardales Cave or Trinidad Grund Cave

In 1821, an earthquake uncovered the entrance, until then sealed, of the Ardales Cave. Also known as the Trinidad Grund Cave, it had been closed for 3,500 years. Just two years after its discovery, in 1823, the cave began receiving national visitors, with some 19th-century references noting the finding of fossilized human remains.

Thanks to its hundreds of paintings and engravings, Ardales Cave is a cultural and heritage treasure of the Paleolithic period and a key reference in southern Spain. To date, 1,010 pictorial representations have been discovered across 252 different areas of the cave.

In addition to the rock art, flint tools and bone implements have been found, associated with human use and likely linked to the creation of the artwork.

4.The Gaitanes Gorge Natural Area

The Gaitanes Gorge Natural Area is an incredible landscape in the province of Málaga. This mountain gorge creates a unique mountain environment. It is the largest protected natural area in the province, spanning the municipalities of Álora, Ardales, and Bobadilla.

The limestone formations of the Sierra de Huma massif give the landscape its characteristic look. The most spectacular feature is undoubtedly the verticality of the enormous rock walls. The Natural Area takes its name from its most breathtaking point: the Gaitanes Gorge, a narrow canyon carved by the Guadalhorce River through Jurassic and Miocene limestone and dolomite.

5. El Chorroand Its Surroundings

El Chorro and its surroundings form an impressive mountainous enclave within the Gaitanes Gorge Natural Park. It is protected for its ecological value and its rich landscape, historical significance, and paleontological wealth.

6. La Sierra de la Huma

The Sierra de la Huma is one of the main geographic attractions in the province of Málaga. Its limestone cliffs and the whimsical rock shapes of the so-called “Little Torcal” make it a unique landscape. Interestingly, there are numerous marine fossil deposits from the Jurassic period, as the area was underwater millions of years ago.

Its peak reaches 1,818 meters, offering stunning views of El Chorro and the Gaitanes Gorge Natural Area, and on clear days, even the Málaga coastline.

7. The Ruins of Bobastro and the Mozarabic Rock-Cut Church

In the municipality of Ardales you’ll find the ruins of the legendary Bobastro fortress, the most important 9th-century rock-cut complex in Málaga. It was an impregnable stronghold created by Omar ibn Hafsún to oppose the Emirate of Córdoba at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century.

Just a few meters from what was once the fortress stand the remains of a Mozarabic rock-cut church, destroyed by Abd al-Rahman III after the final capture of the site and the defeat of Omar ibn Hafsún’s successors.

Did you know that in the US and England it is traditional to exchange cards? They buy beautiful cards on which they write a message of love or friendship. In Ecuador, in addition to flowers and chocolates, they also accompany lovers’ dinners with serenades. How romantic! In Denmark and Norway, it is customary for men to send funny poems to women anonymously. If the woman guesses who the message is from, she wins an Easter egg; if she doesn’t guess, she has to give it to him. How curious! In Colombia, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the third weekend of September.

What is clear is that love is always present, whether here, on the other side of the world, in February or at the end of summer. The important thing is to share it and add moments together. That’s a good gift.

Consider Valentine’s Day gifts and gestures that go beyond the material. Shared experiences have the power to strengthen emotional bonds and create lasting memories. Whether it’s through a love letter, a romantic home-cooked dinner or a stay at the Hotel La Garganta, what matters is the time and attention you devote to your loved one.

Remember, love is best celebrated when it is shared authentically. Make this Valentine’s Day in Malaga a unique and unforgettable experience!

Have you heard of the Lovers’ Rock (Peña de los Enamorados) in Antequera? This striking mountain, located in the heart of the Antequera region, is not only an impressive natural landmark but also the keeper of a beautiful and tragic legend. Let us uncover the hidden story behind the Lovers’ Rock.

The legeng of The Lover’s Rock in Antequera

According to legend, in medieval times a Christian boy was captured and sent to a Moorish house as a servant. There he met the family’s daughter, with whom he fell in love.

The girl, who reciprocated his feelings, knew that it would be impossible for them to be together as her parents would never consent, so they decided to keep their romance a secret, until one day her father found out. Fearing that her father would punish them, they decided to run away and live their love freely.

During their escape, her father found them and cornered them in what we now know as Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers’ Rock) in Antequera. Seeing no way out, the young couple could either give themselves up and renounce their love or prove that their love was as real as life itself. In a final gesture of love, the lovers held hands and threw themselves off the top of the mountain.

Furthermore, if we look at the Lovers’ Rock from a distance, it resembles the shape of a face looking up at the sky, which according to legend is the gaze of the young man who could never take his eyes off the maiden.

This is the legend that surrounds the Lovers’ Rock with a special mystery and gives it its name. But apart from this fantastic story, it also has sites of interest and idyllic views, which attract many people.

The Lovers’ Rock in Antequera is a symbol of love today, which is why many couples travel there to show their affection for each other.

Remember that very close by is El Torcal de Antequera.

In addition to its enchanting legend, the Peña de los Enamorados also has great archaeological importance due to the large population that once lived in the Antequera area and the survival advantages afforded by the height of this hill. These sites date back to the Palaeolithic era.

But these are not the only sites we can find in the lover’s Rock; we can also find sites from the Bronze Age and Roman sites.

This makes it an ideal place to go on expeditions and discover ancient sites.

The Dolmens of Antequera

The Lovers’ Rock is located within the Dolmens of Antequera, a site that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are only 213 natural sites worldwide that UNESCO has recognized as World Heritage, and the Lovers’ Rock is among these selected treasures. Still, no matter how much we describe it, nothing compares to discovering with your own eyes the wonder hidden within this remarkable mountain.
