Antequera: its history

Antequera has been a busy place for many years, and has been considered a human settlement since prehistoric times. Its most important archaeological remains are the Bengali, Vieira and El Romelar stone tombs created during the Bronze Age.

Later, the Romans founded the cities of Antigalia, Singilia Barba and Acilia Plecusa. The Efebo de Antequera was born at this time, a bronze from the 1st century AD, and is currently considered one of the best Roman sculptures in Spain.

During the Arab domination, Madina Antaquira established itself as a relevant population center and acquired great prestige as a frontier military fortress. The King of Castile considered it the key to the kingdom of Granada and tried to seize the city at various times, which was finally taken by El Infante Don Fernando in the year 1410.

In the 16th century, Antequera became one of the most important cities in Andalusia. At this time the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor was built and the Chair of Grammar and Latin was founded.

On the outskirts of Antequera is the archaeological site of the Antequera Dolmens.

Antequera’s heritage was increased with the creation of various churches, such as those of San Sebastián, San Pedro and San Juan Bautista.

The Antequera bullring is one of the best known places in the province.

This bullring is made up of two floors and eight entrance doors and has a current capacity of 8,268 seats.

In 1984, after the Antequera City Council acquired ownership of this place, a rehabilitation and remodeling of the square was carried out.

A new main shadow door is built on its façade following the Antequera model of the 18th century builders. In the different sectors into which the square is divided, called high lines, the wooden roofs were replaced by an arcade of Tuscan columns and semicircular arches.
