Types of coffee in Malaga and its history

It all started with the Café Central Málaga , although unfortunately it closed at the beginning of 2022. This Café is one of the emblematic places of the Malaga capital and is part of its history.

Around 1920 it opened its doors, and in 1954 it was completed with the union of three different cafeterias, El Café Suizo, Café Munich and Café Central.

It was then that the special nomenclature of Malaga coffees began, ordered from the greatest amount of coffee to the least, the coffees of Malaga are the following:

  • Café Solo: It is, as the name itself indicates, a cup only with coffee, for the most daring with this drink.
  • Café Largo: It is a coffee with just a generous splash of milk, as they also say in Malaga with a finger of milk.
  • Café Semi largo: Semi-long coffee is 80% coffee and 20% milk, for coffee lovers but who prefer to slightly lower its flavor.
  • Sólo corto o Sólo cortado refers to a type of coffee where, even if it is all coffee, the entire cup is not filled, only up to a little more than half. For friends of pure coffee on those days when we need energy but we don’t have to go too far.
  • Café Mitad: As its name indicates, it is a coffee that is half milk and half pure coffee, the perfect balance for many.
  • Café Entre Corto: with more milk than coffee but similar to half, it is the opposite of semi-long coffee.
  • Café Corto : Do you remember the short only coffee? Well, instead of filling more than half a cup of coffee, it is that same measure with milk and the rest of the cup with coffee, staying at 30% coffee and 70% milk.
  • Café Sombra: As if it were a shadow we stain the milk with a little coffee, this coffee usually has proportions of 80% milk and 20% coffee.
  • Café nube: even less than a stain, it is as subtle as a cloud in a clear sky, 90% milk and 10% coffee.
  • Finally, the Café No me lo ponga, which is when you obviously don’t want anything.

Although it may seem silly to include this last ”coffee”, it is one of those that appears on the famous poster where the different types of coffee in Malaga were shown at the Café Central.
