The new agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom has removed routine physical border checks at this crossing point, although travellers are still required to carry the appropriate identification documents.

In this guide, we explain what to see in Gibraltar, how to get there and cross from Spain, and the entry requirements in force as of September 2026. Although it shares a land border with Spain, it is a British Overseas Territory.

Its position facing North Africa makes the Rock a privileged viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and, on clear days, the African coastline. Add to this its British heritage, the lively atmosphere of Main Street, picturesque bays, gardens and natural attractions.

It is an excellent destination for a day trip from Málaga, particularly if you want to combine scenery, culture, shopping and free time without having to arrange each journey separately.

What to see in Gibraltar in one day

Although Gibraltar has plenty of interesting places to discover, a day trip gives you enough time to visit its most iconic locations and then explore the town centre at your own pace.

Europa Point

Europa Point is one of Gibraltar’s great viewpoints and one of the southernmost points in the territory. From here, you can see the Strait, the African coastline and the distinctive outline of the Rock.

The area is also home to the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, also known as the King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Mosque, which is easily recognisable by its architecture and seafront setting. It is an essential stop for understanding Gibraltar’s strategic position between two continents.

Camp Bay and Europa Waterfall

Camp Bay lies on Gibraltar’s western coast and offers a different perspective of the territory, looking out across the bay. Nearby is Europa Waterfall, an artificial waterfall included in the panoramic route and an eye-catching stop on the coastal itinerary.

Catalan Bay

This small fishing village is known for its colourful houses and peaceful atmosphere. Catalan Bay reveals Gibraltar’s more Mediterranean side and provides a striking contrast to the busy shopping streets in the centre.

It is a particularly attractive place for photographs and for enjoying views of the Rock’s eastern coastline.

Alameda Botanical Gardens

The Alameda Gardens, also known as the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, are located at the foot of the Rock. Created in the nineteenth century, they contain plant species from different parts of the world and offer a pleasant setting for a stroll.

Their location also makes them a convenient point from which to continue towards the town centre or connect with other visits in the Upper Rock area.

Main Street and Gibraltar town centre

Main Street is Gibraltar’s main shopping street. Here you will find shops, cafés, restaurants and buildings that reflect the destination’s blend of British and Mediterranean influences.

During your free time, you can stroll along the street, visit Casemates Square, try some local food or go shopping. The Gibraltar pound is the local currency, although many establishments accept euros. It is advisable to check the exchange rate before paying.

The Rock, St Michael’s Cave and the macaques

If you would like to complete your day, you can add a visit to the Upper Rock. Its best-known attractions include St Michael’s Cave, Queen’s Balcony viewpoint, Apes Den and the Great Siege Tunnels.

The Barbary macaques are one of Gibraltar’s most famous symbols. Remember that they are wild animals: do not touch or feed them, and avoid carrying visible food near them.

Another optional experience is a boat trip around the bay to see dolphins in the wild.

How to cross the border between Spain and Gibraltar in 2026

Since 15 July 2026, the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom concerning Gibraltar has been provisionally applied. The most visible change for visitors arriving from Spain is the removal of routine checks on people at the land border.

This means that crossing from La Línea de la Concepción is now smoother and, as a general rule, travellers do not need to stop at passport control booths when crossing by land. Schengen border checks are mainly carried out at Gibraltar’s port and airport for passengers arriving from outside the relevant travel area.

However, the absence of routine checks does not remove the requirement to carry valid identification. The authorities may request it, and each traveller remains responsible for meeting the requirements applicable to their nationality and personal circumstances.

Customs controls or occasional checks may also continue. If you make purchases in Gibraltar, you must therefore comply with the current limits and rules for bringing goods into Spain.

What documents do I need to enter Gibraltar?

Entry requirements depend on the traveller’s nationality:

Spanish and other European Union citizens: may travel with their original, valid national identity card or passport.

Travellers of other nationalities: must carry a valid passport and, where applicable, a Schengen visa or a valid residence permit issued by a Schengen country.

Children and teenagers: must have their own valid travel documents. If they are travelling without their parents or legal guardians, additional travel authorisation may be required.

A valid UK visa or travel authorisation does not automatically replace the requirements that apply to Gibraltar. Likewise, the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA, is not required simply to enter Gibraltar. Before travelling, check your particular circumstances on the official visa and entry page of the Gibraltar Borders and Coastguard Agency and the travel advice issued by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Important: although there are currently no routine physical border checks when crossing from Spain, carry your original, valid national identity card or passport throughout the trip. The journey usually takes around two hours, although this can vary depending on traffic, stops and the chosen departure point.

By car

You can drive to La Línea de la Concepción, park on the Spanish side and cross the border on foot. You can also enter Gibraltar by car, but you should consider traffic, parking availability and the terms of your vehicle insurance.

By public transport

It is possible to reach Gibraltar using scheduled public transport, but you will need to check timetables, connections and return services in advance.
